Ms. Kate introduces the Dutch tradition of Sinterklaas with Songs, Dress Up Clothes and Pepernoten!

Ms. Kate came to school today to introduce the Dutch tradition of Sinterklaas.  We heard about how Sinterklaas comes to The Netherlands by boat from Spain.  He comes dressed in a red cape and hat and he usually has a staff in his hand.  Sinterklass has a trusted white horse called Amerigo and some helpers called Piet.  Sinterklaas carries a big book that tells whether each child has been good or naughty in the past year.

Children leave out their shoe with a carrot or apples for Amerigo and milk for Sinterklaas and a rolled up letter asking for something special by the fireplace (or radiator if they don't have a fireplace).  Then on December 5th - the night before Sinterklaas' birthday the children (who have been good) receive a gift from Sinterklaas!

Listen to us learning some songs about the celebration.........

This is the song about Sinterklaas coming on the boat from Spain!

This is the song about throwing Pepernoten to the crowd during the parade!

This is the song about the Piets going from house to house - we can hear them, but we can't see them!

This is the song to say goodbye to Sinterklaas as he sets sail again on December 6th!

See the Piets throwing Pepernoten to Reception children....
