Counting up to 20

During carpet time today we were counting up to 20. We used unifix counters to help us. We noticed that all the numbers above 10 had a block of ten bricks that were the same colour. We found we could count 10 as a block then add more to make a teen number. We now know that 11 is not two 1's it is a ten and a 1.
