In the knowledge and Understanding room this week, the focus has been on experiments! The children have been making predictions about what they think 'might' happen and then after the experiment, they draw a picture showing what 'really' happened. We've had a new experiment every day.
On Monday we tried the 'Soap in a microwave' experiment!!!! In this experiment we placed soap in the microwave and zapped it for 2 minutes..... the children predicted - "it will melt", "it will explode" "it will get smaller", "it will get bigger", it will change colour". The classroom smelled a little jesty afterwards and the soap got remarkably bigger and changed shape. It also felt 'squishy' and 'hot' afterwards.... here are some Monday photos......
On Tuesday we did the 'Glove and Vinegar and Baking Soda' Experiment. The children predicted all sorts of things for this experiment- "it will blow up", "it will make bubbles", it will change colour", it will even "turn into a Christmas tree". In this experiment we placed vinegar in a jar and baking soda in the fingertips of a glove. Then we place the glove around the top of the jar and lifted the fingers so the powder drops into the vinegar..... watch what happens! Sometimes during this experiment the glove expanded to become really, really big and other times the glove popped off the top and vinegar splashed everywhere- this was a pretty exciting experiment indeed! Why not try it at home???
