For this activity the children needed to count the sea creatures on the card and place a peg on the corresponding numeral. When they had finished they could turn the card over and check if they were correct.
Some of the children chose activities from the shelves to work on themselves.
In this activity the children take a rod and read the numeral at the top, they then thread the correct number of beads onto the rod.
Another independent activity is this snail game. The children roll a colour dice and move the corresponding colour snail forward a space.
We have also been making and completing patterns.
With real shells...
and by fishing out the next picture in a pattern and matching it.
On another table the children are counting using shells and beads. First they select a numeral between 1 and 20. They then place the corresponding number of beads in the shell using tweezers. This not only builds on their counting and number recognition skills it also helps develop their fine motor control.
